CDS General Bipin Rawat Biography: CDS General Bipin Rawat is the first Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) of India. He was commissioned into the 5th Battalion of the Eleventh Gorkha Rifles on 16 December 1978.
He became the country’s 27th Chief of Army Staff in December 2016. CDS General Bipin Rawat received many honors including Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal. He became CDS on 31 December 2019.
CDS General Bipin Rawat Biography
CDS General Bipin Rawat was born on 16 March 1958 in Uttarakhand. His father’s name is Lieutenant General Laxman Singh Rawat, who retired from the army with the rank of Lieutenant General. He had his early education at Cambrian High School, Dehradun and St. Edward’s School, Shimla.
He then went to the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, where he was awarded the Sword of Honor for his superior performance.
CDS General Bipin Rawat then moved to the US to study higher defense, where he graduated from the Defense Services Staff College and took a higher command course at Fort Leavenworth to sharpen his command knowledge. He was inducted into the historic XI Gorkha Rifles of the Army on 16 December 1978.
His first posting was in Mizoram and he also led this battalion. During this, his battalion was selected as the best battalion of the North East.
While in this battalion, he played an important role in the biggest wars and counter counter operations. Due to which he got a long experience of war defense and making aggressive policies.
While serving in the army, he served for several battalions, where he gained experience in security policy and combat policy of various locations. For example, he gained experience in the Line of Actual Control while serving in the Infantry, Battalion.
Similarly, working with the 19 Infantry Division operating in the Kashmir Valley provided an opportunity to understand the security structure of Kashmir.
Apart from this he worked for various important departments like Army III Corps, GOC-C Southern Command, IMA Dehradun, Directorate of Military Operations.
Before taking over as the Chief of Army Staff, General Bipin Rawat also took over as the Commander-in-Chief of the Southern Command and as co-chief of the Commander-in-Chief.
CDS General Bipin Rawat has been given the responsibility of commanding a multinational brigade in the Congo as well as important positions such as Secretary General and Force Commander in the United Nations Mission.

CDS General Bipin Rawat became CDS on 31 December 2019 and assumed the post of Chief of Defense Staff on 1 January 2020. Before him, Dalbir Singh Suhag was in this post.
